Gauhati University organised its 29th Convocation on Thursday where 2552 student have participated in the said event. The university authorities, out of this huge number of graduating students, 2552 have presented in this convocation physically. Prof. K. K. Aggarwal, Chairman, National Board of Accreditation was the Chief Guest for the said convocation and during the convocation former Vice Chancellor, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University congratulated the graduates for obtaining the degrees and spoke of the potential that each one had in transforming their immediate environment in the best way possible. Governor of Assam and Chancellor of Gauhati University, Professor Jagdish Mukhi said, “As we celebrate the academic achievements of our students, we must appreciate the richness of the culture & tradition of the region that our students might be brought with them to the University. The academic, sports, social and cultural exposure given by this university are nothing but the repository of values and memory that remain with the students to cherish forever.” He further added that in order to take full advantage of the possibilities that the NEP has opened up, Gauhati University has to prepare itself and identify the areas where there are lacunae and address these judiciously. “The University shall take initiatives various steps with a view to attract North East students and neighbouring countries through student exchange programmes and collaborations with institutions across the globe,” he added. Vice Chancellor, Professor Pratap Jyoti Handique while congratulating all the students on the convocation stated that, “ Gauhati University has put in place the timeline for the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 in a phased manner. It maintains its teaching, learning, research and extension activities and contributes to the overall economic socio-cultural development in India. To realize this aim, the trained and qualified graduates will have to contribute in the formulation of various development policies. In order to sustain the University’s motto of social responsibility and reverence for the public life, tradition, culture and overall development of the state as well as the country this year the awards have been also designed accordingly. Technocrat and Institution Builder Professor Dhirendra Nath Buragohain was awarded with the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa. Eminent author and Lexicographer Sumanta Chaliha, Illustrious Litterateur Nahendra Padun and distinguished scholar of folk culture Dharamsing Teron, were awarded with the degree of “ Degree of Philosophy, honoris causa”. The University is also stated that various developmental events in the next few months shall be organised as part of its 75th Platinum jubilee year with a view to commemorating the “ Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav ”.
In addition to the above, it is stated that the University going to celebrate its Platinum Jubilee year which is to be started from January 26 awarded Degrees and Diplomas to over 1,00,500 undergraduate students, 9,800 postgraduate students, 143 Master Of Philosophy (MPhil) students and 633 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
